Natural Beauty

May 14th, 2012

The first time I ever used a cosmetic on my face, I was sixteen years old. In between my second and third periods, I went into the bathroom to wash my face and came across three beautiful girls applying eye shadow and mascara. It’s not like it was the first time I’d seen a girl put make-up on, but it was the first time I was actually interested in it. I was a basketball-playing, jersey-wearing, foul-mouthed tomboy who loved nothing more than to spend my weekends camping up in the mountains, or rock climbing with whoever was brave enough to join me. Hair and make-up was not something that I ever deemed to be important. But once I put on lipstick for the first time, it was game over, I was hooked! And once my friends and I were high school seniors, we were swapping make-up reviews like we were on the Home Shopping Network!

It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized the importance of natural make-up. All these years I’d been using the cheapest cosmetics I could find. Hey, don’t judge, when you’re a student, Clinique isn’t exactly in the budget, so a girl has to supplement. Don’t worry, it may have taken me a while, but I did eventually come to the conclusion that cheap doesn’t mean clean, as in, my skin was a mess from putting things on my skin that weren’t pure. So here I am telling you ladies that though I know it’s hard to resist those unbelievable sales on $2.99 eye shadows, or $5.99 foundations, but in the long run, you’ll just end up buying more cosmetics to help you combat all the break-outs you get from putting inexpensive and impure chemicals on your face, yuck! I know we’re all on a budget, but if you’re the kind of gal that likes to put something on your face everyday, don’t you think its worth investing in cosmetics that are actually good for your skin? Of course! So let’s have a look at one of the most fabulous natural and organic cosmetic brands that I like to use on the regular.

Lavera Naturkosmetik is a brand that I sort of came upon by accident a couple of years ago. I think it’s a brand originates in Europe, but there are hundreds of retailers across the United States and Canada that sell their products. I was at a nightclub one night with a girlfriend of mine, and she pulled a Levera product out of her bag. I’d never seen it before, and she promptly gave me a run down on why she never uses anything else. Not only are all of their products certified 100% natural, containing organic ingredients, but 100 of their products are also certified Vegan! Say no more, I was hooked! I’m a big fan of their mineral eye shadows. They’re all talc free, and if you use a good primer, they provide rich colour that lasts forever. I also have an armful of their skincare products. I love the Wild Rose Exfoliating Wash to keep my face looking polished and fresh and the Wild Rose Eye Gel which I use almost every morning to combat puffiness.

There are hundreds of brands out there that claim to be all natural, but Lavera truly is. The older I get, the more I realize that my skin is one of my greatest investments. Looks may fade, but there’s nothing wrong with taking great care with what you have. And if that means I have to shell out a little extra cash to ensure I don’t put poisons on my face, so be it. It’s au natural for this gal!

Acupuncture, Every Woman’s Best Kept Secret

April 11th, 2012

I know that you’re used to me posting my favourite homemade beauty recipes, but I thought I would share with you another one of my holistic beauty secrets, one that you’ll need to see a professional about. For the last seventeen years, I’ve been a migraine sufferer, and if you’ve ever had a migraine, you know that that you can spend days on end with your shoulders at your ears, and your forehead in a crinkled mess. It’s an excruciatingly painful experience, and the tension is evidenced all over your face.

I’m not obsessed with the aging process. In fact, I very much look forward to earning those lines and wrinkles, I’ll wear them like a badge of honor. The idea of Botox seems absolutely absurd to me, and I cannot imagine injecting myself with botulism all in the name of beauty. But I am a fan of needles, teeny ones. Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine. It’s a series of solid filiform needles that are gently tapped into the body at particular points, that stimulate and move energy throughout the body. I’m not entirely sure how it all works scientifically, but it’s been a wonderful remedy for me over the years. Not only is acupuncture effective, but unlike expensive beauty regiments, it’s incredibly affordable. Whether you’re surviving on an administrative assistant salary, or a struggling student trying to relieve some post-exam stress, this remedy is within reach.

Migraines are just one of the afflictions that you can treat with acupuncture. Here are a few others:

Digestive Disorders (Constipation, diarrhea, spastic colon, colitis, and stomach ulcers)

Respiratory Disorders (Asthma, sinusitis, allergies, bronchitis and sore throats)

Neurological and Mental Disorders (Depression, hormone fluctuation, headaches, lower back pain, neck and shoulder pain)

If you are suffering from any of the above afflictions, or any other type of pain or discomfort, consider discussing the possibility of getting referred to an acupuncturist with your doctor. It’s essential to go to someone who is properly certified, and knows what they’re doing. It’s not a painful procedure, and at the very worst, you may feel some discomfort or aching for the rest of the day.

Umm, Excuse Me, You’re Glowing!

March 26th, 2012

Okay all you fair-haired, sun-worshiping, divas, there is nothing cute about a sunburn. It’s painful, it means that you’ve increased your chances of skin cancer exponentially (which really isn’t cute) and to appeal to your vanity, it means that you’ve basically guaranteed yourself several more sunburns over the course of the summer by making your skin vulnerable! So that sun-kissed look you were going for, forget it, you’ll have to spend the rest of your summer bundled up like a mummy, unless you think that looking like a Maine Lobster is sexy! Look, you don’t need to be a nurse to know that if you’re walking out that door into the sun without sunscreen on, you have a death wish! But, in the event that you do end up getting a bit crispy unexpectedly, here are a few concoctions to make your skin feel right as rain again:

1) Cold Compress. Grab a tea-towel or cheesecloth, grab a handful of ice cubes from the icebox and start cool that skin down. If you stand next to someone with a severe sunburn, you can literally feel the heat radiating off of them. Apply the compress to the affected areas multiple times a day for periods of 15 – 20 minutes at a time.

2) The Witch Hazel Rub Down. Witch Hazel has several fantastic properties and it’s highly effective for treating sunburns. Grab yourself a cloth and moisten it with Witch Hazel. Always dab, don’t rub the skin. It’s actually an astringent, but also serves as soothing anti-inflammatory that can provide you with some temporary relief.

3) Tea Bags. If you have a small area of skin that’s been burned, like your eyelids, or the tops of your hands or feet, one of my favourite remedies is the ‘ol cold tea bag remedy. Soak the bags in cool water, and place them on your skin. The tannic acid in tea which is surprisingly effective against sunburn pain.

These are just a few ideas to help ease the pain of a blistering sunburn. Obviously, the best way to avoid this heated situation is to slather on the sunscreen and opt for tinted moisturizers if looking sun-kissed is your prerogative.

Acne, Be Gone!

March 20th, 2012

I woke up one morning a few months back, and shuffled my way into the bathroom. I flipped on the light, took a gander at myself in the mirror and shrieked! My face was riddled with bright red pimples on my cheeks, forehead and chin. I looked like I had come down with a serious case of the chicken pox. In fact, I was in such denial, I had convinced myself that it was just a reaction to our laundry detergent, or something I’d eaten the night before. Me?? Have acne, impossible! But after a rather enlightening chat with a friend of mine who’s a pediatric nurse, she explained to me that adult acne was becoming more and more common.

This was new to me. I had near perfect skin all through my adolescence, and had little or no knowledge about what I was going to need to fight this new affliction. Did I have to change my diet? Was I too stressed? After chatting with my friend, I marched off to the pharmacy to buy my new anti-acne regiment. After spending an hour reading labels, and being absolutely frightened by what I found, I took everything out of my basket, put it back on the shelf, and marched right back out of the store! As always, I was sure I could come up with something at home that may take longer, but wouldn’t leave me looking like Michael Jackson!

Baking Soda Mask – This doesn’t work for everyone, but it works wonders on my skin, without leaving me feeling like I’ve just had a chemical peel!

1 Tablespoon Baking Soda
3 Tablespoons Water

Mix the two in a bowl until it’s a paste. Wash your face with a mild cleanser pat dry. Apply the paste to your face and leave it. Go read a book, do some laundry, feed the cat, just let your skin marinate. After an hour, rinse with some warm water, and pat dry. If your acne does not appear to be irritated, and you have fairly oily skin, try this regiment 2-3 times a week. If your skin is very sensitive to a lack of  moisture, be careful with this regiment as it could possibly remove the skins tolerance for acid, and create imbalance with the skins’ pH levels.

Egg White Mask – This is a less invasive mask and can be quite effective and extremely cost-efficient!

1 Egg White

Crack and egg into a bowl, making sure the egg white doesn’t mix. Whip the egg white vigorously until it’s a lovely froth. Apply the froth to a clean face and leave on for about 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and pat your face dry. This mask is known to tighten the skin, and reduce the redness in pimples.

Not all acne with respond to holistic recipes. If it did, the billion dollar acne biz would be six feet under! For those of us who don’t suffer with chronic acne problems, we can try these less harsh remedies to combat our break-outs.

Cut the Curly Hair Drama!

March 16th, 2012

If you have curly hair, you’ve probably been through the ringer with your hair. Not only do I have curly hair, because of my Afro-Caucasian heritage, my hair has a mind of its’ own! I could, like most women with my type of hair, just relax it and keep it straight, but I’m not a fan of using chemicals, I choose to keep my hair natural. Unfortunately, this means that I have a crazy regiment that I need to undergo each week to make sure I don’t end up looking like the straw man from the Wizard of Oz! So in keeping with my dedication to keeping it natural, I’ve got two  fab recipes up my sleeve to help all my curly-haired sisters out there. And don’t worry, don’t need to be a pharmacy tech to mix these up these concoctions , they’re fast, easy, and best of all, au natural!

Combating the Frizz with Hair Rinses

The most common complaint amongst us curly-haired gals is that our hair can feel like Death Valley sometimes! It almost as though, whatever we do, we just can’t get moisture into our hair. No moisture means straw hair, and straw hair leads to split ends! One great way to deal with frizz is by rinsing your hair with something other than your shower water. One of my favourites is Apple Cider Vinegar. This age old remedy that works wonders on curly, frizzy hair. It has a chelating agent, which helps remove harmful minerals from your hair and scalp. It also helps to balance the pH in your hair, to keep your hair smooth from the follicle right to the tip! Just mix 1 cup of water with 1/4 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar. After you condition, rinse your hair with the ACV mix, and gently towel dry.

The Natural Hair Conditioner

Sometimes, conditioning your hair every day just isn’t enough. I deep condition my hair at least once a week. Sometimes I use heat, and sometimes I don’t, it really just depends on how damaged my hair is. Avocados have a wonderful moisturizing properties and are used in several beauty recipes. This is my favourite recipe: Throw together 1 cup of mayonnaise, a 1/2 cup of avocado and mash it together until you have a paste. Your can rub it through your hair, or use a hair pick or detangler  to make sure it covers every strand. Throw on a plastic shower cap and wrap your head with a hot towel. Leave it on for 20 minutes and wash it out.

Making A Homemade Spa Kit

March 6th, 2012

For me, the month of March is often the most expensive month of the year! Five of my seven closest girlfriends were all born in March, and as the years go on, it’s getting harder and harder to find original ideas to surprise them with. All in all, there is nothing more special than receiving a gift from the heart. A gift that you’ve dedicated some serious time and thought to and something that your dear friend is really going to appreciate.

If you’ve been following this blog, you know we’re super passionate about using all natural beauty products. We’re all about heading to the refrigerator for a beauty treatment rather than spending your precious money at the beauty shop. Without question, what woman doesn’t love going to the spa? When I’m vacation, at the end of a fun-filled day of sightseeing, wining and dining, I love to unwind under the hands a very capable massage therapist. So let’s combine our love of the spa, with some fabulous natural beauty recipes, to put together a fabulous homemade spa kit either for yourself, or a good friend.

Homemade Bath Salts

1 Cup of fine grain Sea Salt
1 Cup of Epsom Salt
4 Tablespoons of Dendritic Salt (Adding this to your bath actually elongates the aroma of your bath!)
1 Teaspoon of lemon essential oil
1/2 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract (I’ve actually use pure Mexican Vanilla because the smell is intoxicating!)
5-6 Drops of Food Colouring

As for packaging, I like to use organza drawstring bags. They’re adorable and reusable.

Classic Honey & Oat Facial Mask

1/2 Cup of Regular or Instant Oats
1/4 Cup of Organic Honey
1/2 Cup of Water
1 Teabag (I like to use Earl Grey, but Orange Pekoe works great too!)

There are obviously elements that you don’t need to package up (the water), and the rest can be neatly presented in a lovely handmade basket.

Lovely Lip Balm

1/2 Ounce of Beeswax Beads or Pellets
4 Ounces of Almond Oil
1 Teaspoon of coloured Jojoba Beads
2 Teaspoons of Your Favourite Essential Oils

Mix the first 3 ingredients into a bowl and melt it in the microwave. Stir with spoon (I used a chopstick to make sure most of the mix was left in the bowl). Let the mixture cool for a few minutes, then add the essential oil. Stir and pour the mix into lip balm jars.

Coffee, Your Skin’s New Best Friend

February 21st, 2012

I’m not much of a coffee drinker myself, but I do love the rich aroma of an exotic pot of coffee brewing. I may take a little longer than the average coffee drinker to rouse myself in the morning, but with a refreshing glass of orange juice and a bowl of my favourite cereal, I’ve got enough pep in my step, to take on the day and strive at my job in in operations management. But for those women who need the equivalent of a coffee drip hooked up to their arm to get-up-and-go in the morning, guess what ladies, the grinds from that same cup of coffee, is now your new secret weapon for gorgeous skin!

The Body Scrub

The secret to polished, smooth, soft skin is exfoliation. No fancy revitalizing cream can do it’s work if you’re not sloughing off dead skin cells on a regular basis. This mix may be a bit too abrasive for your face, so this recipe is best used as a body scrub. So head to your kitchen,  grab 2 cups of coffee grounds, 1/2 cup of raw sugar or sea salt, and 2/3 tablespoon of massage oil. Mix the three items in a  good sized bowl, and apply the mixture in a circular motion to your damp skin. It’s best to do this in the shower when your pores are open (plus the clean up is much easier!). Pat dry, and apply your favourite moisturizer.

Face of an Angel

I adore home facial recipes. There is nothing greater than using all natural products from your kitchen  to look your best rather than chemicals in a bottle. So try this luxurious facial recipe. Take 5 tablespoons of almond oil, 1 tablespoon of fine coffee grinds  and 1 tablespoon of milk powder. Mix it up with a fork in a small bowl and apply it to your damp face. Use your finger tips to rub the mixture in a circular motion. Make sure you go up to your hairline, where oil and dirt collects the most. Rinse with luke warm water and pat dry. Use a gentle moisturizer, and voila, the face of an angel!

Cellulite Be Gone!

Did you know that in fancy spas across the country, aestheticians use coffee grounds as a treatment for cellulite? The caffeine in coffee beans actually helps increase blood flow, giving skin a smoother, less bumpy appearance. Put 1/2 cup of coffee grounds, 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, and mix them together into a paste. If the grounds are being collected a while after being used, warm them up in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Hop in the tub, take a loofah mitt, and give your thighs and derriere a good scrub in a circular motion. Here’s the strange part. Grab some plastic wrap, and it around your thighs and buttocks. Now, grab a rolling pin from the kitchen, and roll it over your skin like you’re baking cookies. Peruse through a Cosmo for ten minutes, and than rinse with warm water. Do this at least twice a week, and within three treatments, you’ll start to see a difference!

Best Kept Secrets for Lovely Locks

February 7th, 2012

Our hair. Like most women, you probably have a love hate relationship with your surly locks. You have hair epiphanies, moments where your hair looks like you’ve just stepped out of a chair at Taylor Taylor, and days where you want to hide under a rock because no matter how much product you put in it, you just can’t tame it. The latter is probably the way I feel most days about my hair. I happen to be part black and part caucasian, and I have an afro that’s so thick, but hair that’s so soft and frizzy, that getting it to do anything I want is damn near impossible. But I’ve realized that before I get all worked up over my hair not cooperating, what’s most important, is that it’s healthy, strong and not getting ready to fall out of my head! Being mixed, my hair suffers from all sorts of ailments, dryness, excess oil, split ends, you name it! So I’m constantly mixing up recipes to give it a little oomf!  If you’ve just had it with your lazy locks, give some of these recipes a try!

1) MMmm Mayo! Now, before you wrinkle your nose up, this is a fabulous, inexpensive, age-old remedy that your mama, and her mama’s mamma probably used! It’s stood the test of time, and we’re bringing it back! Head to the grocery store and pick yourself up a jar of regular mayonaise (don’t buy Miracle Whip). Make sure your hair is damp, but not dripping wet, we want the mayo to hold onto your hair and scalp. Rub the mayo into your scalp first, than work out towards the ends. When you’re all “lathered up”, grab a plastic bag, or tight-fitted shower cap and wrap your hair to trap the heat in. Leave on for 20-30 minutes. The more damaged your hair, the longer you leave it on. Rinse out with some diluted shampoo so you don’t have to walk around smelling like a salad bowl, and voila, the softest, most conditioned hair you’ve ever felt!

2) The De-chlorinator - I used to be an avid swimmer, and would spent at least three nights of the week in at the local recreational centre. And like most women who swim, I had a really difficult time keeping my hair from drying out and my ends splitting. Here’s a great little recipe I picked up that helped minimize the damage being done. Grab yourself an egg, or if you have exceptionally thick hair, grab two. Throw the eggs, three tablespoons of olive oil, and half of a peeled cucumber into a blender or food processor. When it’s a lovely emulsion, rub it into your hair from tip to root, and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse out with warm water. If you do this twice monthly, you will significantly reduct excess dryness due to chlorine and keep your hair from getting bleached out!

3) Aspirin is Awesome! Another favourite of mine is the ‘ol aspirin for anti-dandruff defence. It’s true, not only does it prevent heart attacks and cure a headache. Aspirin, like many anti-dandruff shampoos that use salicylic acid, aspirin contains salicylates.  Crush up two or three aspirin tablets between a couple of spoons, and mix thoroughly into a capful of your shampoo. Lather up, and leave the mixture on your hair for about 10 minutes to allow the salicyclates to penetrate your scalp. When you’re done, rinse thoroughly with warm water and be on your merry way!

Sexy Skin Spells Success!

February 4th, 2012

As a woman, I wake up each morning, splash some cold water on my face, briefly linger over my reflection in the mirror, and I feel time nipping at my ankles, reminding me that I’m not getting any younger. Then I laugh, and remind myself that I’m only 30 and a line here or a wrinkle here is nothing more than a badge of honor. And even if those wrinkles became more prominent, I’m an old fashioned girl, I’m not a proponent of plastic surgery. I don’t even believe in botox. But what I do believe in, is taking care of your skin, after all, it’s all we get, there’s no re-do! I believe in sunscreen, moisturizer, exfoliating and a healthy diet and I leave the rest up to Mother Nature! You don’t have to learn to how to become a dermatologist to get gorgeous skin, here are a few fab recipes that will help to keep you looking youthful.

Banana-Rama Beats Wrinkles

Snag yourself a ripe banana, take a third of it and mash it up until it’s a lovely cream. Add about 3 tablespoons of yogurt and a drizzle of honey (use organic  honey to ensure there is nothing unnatural in your homemade mask).  You can either use your hand, or a spatula to smear it onto your face. Leave it on for about 15-20 minutes and then rinse off gently with warm (not hot) water. Bananas are rich in nutrients and natural moisturizers for the skin which contributes to healthy elasticity in the skin.

Soft Skin Exfoliant

This is one of my personal favourites. I have very sensitive skin, so I have to be very careful about the kinds of products that come into contact with my skin, including my laundry detergent! But sensitivity aside, it’s still essential to exfoliate to slough off all that dead skin and pollutants that stay on our face. Grab a 1/2 a cup of cornmeal, a 1/4 cup of milk (make sure it’s not skim, you need something creamy!), 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 1 table spoon of olive oil and 4-5 drops of tea tree oil. Give it a good mix, then rub onto your face. Rinse with warm water and gently pat your face dry. Voila, silky soft and thoroughly exfoliated!

Under-Eye Be Gone!

Like many women, the skin under my eyes is incredibly thin and when I’m tired, my dark veins become rather prominent, which makes me look like a zombie! While I often use under eye concealer, I always love using natural products. Potatoes have a potent enzyme called catecholase which is often used in cosmetics and skin products to lighten skin tones. Take 1 potato, chop it up into large pieces, and either use a food processor or a blender to whip it up into a starchy paste. For safety purposes, put the mash into a cheese cloth and wipe it under your eye. Be very careful not to get any of the potato juice in your eyes! Leave under the eyes for 15-20 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. You want to do this several times a week to start to see results.

Beauty Secrets from Your Refrigerator!

January 23rd, 2012

Let’s face it girls, when we’re in between paycheques, that trip to Sephora can blow our budget into oblivion. But we still have to look and feel fabulous, so how do we make magic happen with minimal spending? Skip the trip to the pharmacy, and hit up the produce section of your local grocery store. An absolute smorgasbord of beauty products await, all you need is a few key recipes to get you started!

Love those luscious lips! We seem to be fairly consistent with exfoliating our faces and body’s, but we forget to give our smackers a little TLC. Just as our skin, the flesh on our lips also flakes off and needs a good scrubbing. Ensuring our lips are clean and smooth makes for flawless lipstick application. Here’s how:

1) In small bowl, mix up a teaspoon of sugar and a 1/4 of a teaspoon of olive oil. With an old (but very clean) tooth brush or your fingers, exfoliate your lips in a circular motion for a few minutes. When you’re done, dry your lips and apply your favourite lip balm. Do this every other night of the week until your lips start feeling soft without treatment.

Gorgeous Glam! Whether you’re heading out for an evening of glamorous fun, or down to the beach for a fabulous evening picnic, every girl loves a little glitter. This fast and easy recipe will add that little something extra to your sun-kissed skin.

1) Mix 3-4 Tablespoons of 100% natural aloe vera gel and 1/2 a teaspoon of extremely fine glitter. If you want to add a scent to your glitter, try adding a beautiful essential oil. This not only makes you smell like heaven, but it also makes the glitter glide onto your skin effortlessly.

Peel off those Pesky Hairs!  Facial hair is such a bummer. And if you’re like me and feel completely exasperated by the wall of hair removal products at the pharmacy, try this little at-home remedy for stubborn facial hair.

1) Take a 1/2 of a cup of flour, a 1/2 of a cup of sugar and 2 egg whites and mix them together in a bowl (it’s best if you use your hands). When the mixture gets good and sticky, use either your hands or a spatula to apply it to your face. Go grab yourself an issue of Cosmo, and wait until it dries. When it’s dry, peel off the muck from your face, and voila, smooth, hairless skin!
